Guidelines
Why a thorough semen analysis is important.
Male factor infertility accounts for approximately 40% of fertility-related problems. A semen analysis includes the counting of the number and concentration of sperm in a sample, as well as the percentage which are motile. This is a highly important variable since sperm need to swim long distances in the reproductive tract. In addition, the size and shape (morphology) of the sperm are assessed. Lastly, the presence of infection or inflammation in the seminal or prostate fluid is also evaluat-ed, and infections are treated with antibiotics. All patients experiencing infertility should undergo semen testing to assess the likelihood of fertilization, and to decide whether advanced techniques, including insemination or in vitro fertilization with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) will be anticipated or required.

How is the semen analysis performed?
No more than 3-5 days of abstinence should precede the semen analysis, since longer periods of abstinence can be associated with higher percentages of low motility. Before you produce the specimen, wash the penis thoroughly. Do not use any lubricants including soaps, as they may negatively affect the analysis. If the specimen is produced off-site, it must be collected into a sterile, wide-mouthed container and brought to the laboratory within one hour of collection. A 4.5-oz, sterile screw-on cap container can be obtained from our office or any drug store. Be careful to collect the entire sample into the container. Lastly, PLEASE label the specimen cup with your name and note the time of collection. All specimens not properly labeled will be rejected. In addition, identifica-tion (i.e., driver s license or picture ID) must be brought to the facility to enable us to properly identify the person providing the samples.
